In Summerlin This Fall, the Favorites That Stayed Moved In With a Bigger Host

"Come find us. Come see familiar faces. Come taste the coffee again." That was the Instagram message from the team behind Sambalatte in September, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The coffee house had just reopened under a new name, inside someone else's restaurant.

That message also describes the larger pattern on Summerlin's west side over the past ten weeks. The long-running favorites with loyal followings are still around. Each of them now runs under a larger operator's roof. The independent tenants that operated on their own in those spaces are the ones that left.

The coffee bar that now shares a door with a tavern

Sambalatte spent 16 years at Boca Park. According to the Review-Journal's August report, it closed there on August 27 because it could not agree on a lease renewal. In that announcement, founder Luiz Oliveira described the shop's 16 years in the community and said the company was "actively searching for a beautiful new home."

The new home turned out to be across the street. Espresso Urbano by Sambalatte now operates inside PKWY Tavern at 450 S. Rampart Blvd. in Tivoli Village. The coffee and drinks come from Espresso Urbano, and the food comes from PKWY Tavern's kitchen. It's open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The setup is built for quick visits. The shop's own message encourages ordering ahead, skipping the line and pulling into one of the dedicated 15-minute pickup spots. Coffee customers no longer need a lease of their own. They share the tavern's entrance, kitchen and parking.

Red Rock kept its seafood counter by taking it in-house

The same thing happened on a larger scale at Red Rock Resort. On September 1, Station Casinos announced that "the entities that operate Lotus of Siam, Naxos Taverna and the Red Rock Oyster Bar outlets have agreed that their tenancies will end effective Oct. 29," according to 8 News Now.

All three restaurants left the same arrangement. Only one of them got a plan to continue. Station said it would "resume operations of the Red Rock Oyster Bar Oct. 30 and will continue to offer its signature recipes and dishes that have made it a city-wide favorite," and it stressed that the Oyster Bar is not closing.

The Red Rock Oyster Bar's menu page describes what Station operation will look like. The menu is modeled on the original Palace Station Oyster Bar, with freshly shucked oysters, homemade chowders, gumbo, pan roasts and seafood pastas cooked to order. The page also says the exterior will be changed to match the Oyster Bars at Durango and Palace Station. Under this plan, the Summerlin location becomes one of a matched set of Station Oyster Bars around the valley.

Lotus of Siam's Red Rock location had opened in 2022 and closed with the Oct. 29 tenancy change, Eater Vegas reported. Naxos Taverna closed on the same date. For Summerlin diners who still want that kitchen, 8 News Now reported that Lotus of Siam continues on Flamingo Road and at its original Commercial Center location on East Sahara Avenue, which reopened in May. In its September announcement, Station said "plans for the other two restaurants will be announced in the coming weeks."

Downtown Summerlin lost a standalone tenant and gained a tavern

Downtown Summerlin had two changes in eight days, and both fit the pattern. La Neta Cocina y Lounge closed on Tuesday, September 29, after five years at 1770 Festival Plaza Drive, Suite 200. Its operator told the Review-Journal that the team had made the "difficult decision to close La Neta." Eater Vegas described it as a Downtown Summerlin staple for shoppers, known for Mexican food and a strong tequila program.

Eight days earlier, on September 21, Finney's Crafthouse opened at 10955 Oval Park Drive, according to Eater Vegas's new-restaurant map. It's a sports tavern serving pub food and craft beer, the same kind of large, multipurpose room that now hosts Sambalatte's coffee at Tivoli Village.

Eater Vegas's fall closures roundup calls it "a rough couple of months for Las Vegas restaurants," with dozens closing at the end of summer. Valley-wide, the list includes closures on the Strip, in Chinatown and in the Arts District, as well as Summerlin's three. The Summerlin entries share a pattern. The names that kept serving here did it by joining a host that already had a building, a kitchen or a casino floor.

The season's biggest host is Downtown Summerlin itself

The largest host on the west side, the Downtown Summerlin district, starts its holiday season in less than two weeks. The schedule on Summerlin.com's events calendar starts the week after this post publishes.

  1. Friday, Nov. 13: Rock Rink opens at The Lawn. It's an 8,000-square-foot real-ice rink with a holiday train, open through Monday, Jan. 18, with themed skate nights in December.
  2. Friday, Nov. 13: Santa Chalet opens at Macy's Promenade for Santa visits and photos through Thursday, Dec. 24.
  3. Friday, Nov. 20: The Downtown Summerlin Holiday Parade begins on Park Centre Drive. It runs at 6 p.m. every Friday and Saturday through Saturday, Dec. 19, with a North Pole theme, snow effects and Santa.
  4. Friday, Nov. 20: Enchant Las Vegas opens at Las Vegas Ballpark with a Christmas light maze, skating and live entertainment, running through Dec. 27.
  5. Sunday, Dec. 6: The Hanukkah Celebration takes over Park Centre Drive from 4 to 6 p.m. with a menorah lighting, activities and entertainment.

From Nov. 20 on, the parade's Friday and Saturday 6 p.m. runs on Park Centre Drive fall during Rock Rink's season at The Lawn. Both Finney's Crafthouse on Oval Park Drive and the empty La Neta space on Festival Plaza Drive are within the district hosting those crowds.

Farther west at Red Rock Resort, Station said the Oyster Bar would keep the signature recipes that made it a citywide favorite, and its menu page lists Palace Station-style pan roasts and gumbo. Weekday mornings, Espresso Urbano's 15-minute pickup spots at Tivoli Village are open from 7 a.m. until the 2 p.m. close.

Which coffee bar, oyster counter or tavern sits a few minutes from a front door is part of what a Summerlin address offers.
